Eight years after escaping a decade of captivity, Amanda Berry is working on bringing children home

The 34-year-old, who was kidnapped in 2003 at the age of 16, has teamed up with the U Marshals Service for its Operation Safety Net initiative founded in northern Ohio. Over the course of a month, the US. Through Operation Safety Net, Marshals were able to safely locate 35 missing and vulnerable children between the ages of 13 and 18 who worked with Amanda and other local and state partners

“I definitely hope they know miracles can happen,” Berry told Good Morning America “” I know it’s not always easy to know that some parents have to wait years after years for their child to come home but hopefully they take it more seriously that I am involved I hope that I am a beacon of hope for them ”

With the success of Operation Safety Net, the US. Marshals Service has now established a standing force in northern Ohio

“One of the main reasons Operation Safety Net was so successful was Amanda Berry,” said US. Marshal for the Northern District of Ohio, Pete Elliott said “She’s a great example of Cleveland, Ohio, where you fight and never stop, and that’s what she’s doing. We’re doing this across the country and we’ll try to help every single child that we can bring back along with Amanda Berry ”

Berry, who now works as a missing persons attorney at Fox8, a local Cleveland news station, said helping out with work to bring missing children home was part of the process to help her to find her voice

“In the beginning I was so scared to do something,” she said. “I was really scared to leave the house and you know I was noticed but now I feel like I was doing it more as a blessing consider that I am on this side and that I am blessed enough to help and that I can finally use my voice forever ”

She also credits her mother who, as she said, never gave up looking for her when she was missing all those years ago

“I push my mom more every day. She fought so hard for me when I was gone and I think now I’m trying to finish what she started for the missing,” Berry said. “In the beginning Nobody was to call, nobody was there to help you print your missing posters of your child You know, a lot has changed since 2003 and I’m just glad I can be here and continue my mother’s work ”

The US. The marshals are now performing similar operations across the country and have been helping bring nearly 400 children home since October last year Berry created a public notice that the agency will now use for training programs
