Movies are not much clunkier than “Deadly Illusions”, an unconvincing mishmash of psychodrama and erotic thriller full of silly plot holes obvious dialogue and risky bad actions and reactions

Kristin Davis (“Sex and the City”) plays Mary Morrison, a supposedly best-selling author who is pushed back into the book world after a long hiatus from a Megabucks offer from her needy publisher. Mary is Resilient – Something About Weird Things That happen to her when she writes But she was forced into the deal by her husband Tom (Dermot Mulroney, what the hell are you doing with it?) who secretly made some bad investments and needs the money (and apparently a shiny Range Rover too) and a trophy house)

But it’s a shame poor Mary can’t juggle writing, mothers her twin son and daughter, and Tom is a good wife So she hires a nanny – in an immensely fleeting fashion – to fill the void Shocker: Mary’s doe-eyed, wide-eyed and unhealthy new helper Grace (Greer Grammer) may not be what she seems (“The hand that The cradle shakes, “anyone?) and Mary, stuck with writer’s block, a dubious work ethic and penchant for babysitting skinny diving, bra shopping, and juicy dancing are soon in a series of satisfying Sapphic clinches with sexy young Grace But are these – and Tom’s apparent indiscretions – real or are they “illusions”? And will they turn “fatally”? Go ahead, guess

So much is wrong here, but a few lowlights are: Nobody knows how old Grace is, let alone anything else about her; We can barely tell what Mary’s new novel is about and how it relates to the craziness she’s experiencing (and don’t get me started on her fake nonsense) and why exactly does Mary smoke cigars, write her books in longhand, and listen to music on vinyl? Does it even say anything about her? (Note: no)

The whole superficial mess that was written and staged by Anna Elizabeth James flies off the rails in the last act in a deluge of poorly staged and edited violence, intertwined revelations and a strange coda, all of which leave much unexplained

Rated: R, for sexual content / nudity, some bloody violence, and language Running time: 1 hour, 54 minutes Play: Available on Netflix
