The fire began in a nature reserve in Oakford and triggered an emergency alert to people in an area that is part of Rowley Road, Kwinana Freeway, Mortimer Road, King Road, Thomas Road and Nicholson Road in parts of Oakford, Casuarina, Banjup, is limited Hammond Park, Forrestdale, Wandi, Wellard, Anketell and Oldbury in the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, town of Armadale and town of Kwinana

Up to 100 acres have been burned so far with aerial photographs of the scene showing homes in direct threat and multiple fires burning in industrial areas

Russell Wells, district officer for the Department of Fire and Rescue Services, said the size of the fire has increased significantly since the emergency alert was first issued, and challenging weather conditions hampered efforts to contain the fire

“It’s moving rapidly west and we have homes and property in danger in Casuarina, Oakford and Anketell

“So we have firefighters doing a great job protecting homes and life in the area, but the conditions are obviously very challenging for them right now”

About 200 firefighters are fighting the fire from the ground and the air, and Mr. Wells expects the fire department to stay on the ground on Saturday night

“It will certainly be present overnight, so we will definitely be here overnight and tomorrow I would say, possibly for the next few days,” he said

“We expect similar wind conditions, it was quite strong and gusty this afternoon

“We assume that the same wind conditions will continue into the evening and overnight, so that we may see gusts of up to 40 or 50 kilometers per hour”

The fire has closed the Kwinana Freeway between Mortimer and Anketell Roads, causing significant traffic delays

The Justice Department says a command post has been set up in the prison parking lot and social visits have been canceled

Evacuation centers for affected residents have been set up at Briggs Park Pavilion in Byford and Kwinana Recquatic in Kwinana

Residents are told to exit their homes west on Thomas Road, Anketell Road, or Rowley Road
