In the Oscar-winning film Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? from 1966, a married couple in trouble invites a couple of virtual strangers to their house after a party. The couple then verbally tears up in front of their guests and throws themselves as dysfunctional stars of an abusive tableau that terrifies and embarrasses the invited people in Who is Afraid before Virginia Woolf? Viewers watch the story of the couple and the people they want to cause their problems, but in Sam Levinson’s new Netflix movie Malcolm & Marie, the audience takes on the role of the guests â ???? random people who stumbled upon the shitshow relationship of the century and can’t find a polite way to get out of the situation

Malcolm & Marie plays John David Washington and Zendaya as the title characters Malcolm is an aspiring filmmaker whose latest project premiered a few hours before the events of this film, and Marie is his visibly younger girlfriend than the couple from premiere to their stunning short-term rental Returning to Malibu, Malcolm’s euphoria over the audience’s positive reaction to his film gives way to a blowout of an hour and 45 minutes that appears to be twice as long and lasts almost the entire length of the film

‘Malcolm & Marie’ restores the emotional experience of being at home with a friend when his parents start fighting

The trailer for Malcolm & Marie introduces the film with the sentence: “This is not a love story”a ???? This part is right. The trailer then clarifies,” This is the story of love”a ???? In that case, yikes, while it’s true that love can be complicated and harsh, this movie captures little of that feeling and instead restores the emotional experience of being at a friend’s house when yours.” Parents Start Struggling The arcs and break-ins of the argument contain spoilers, but the details aren’t as important as the relentless dynamics of their mutual beef and the grueling effect it has on the plot of the film
Much is said about Washington and Zendaya’s appearances in this film, admirable not for their credibility but for their ability to inhabit the bizarre verbal pocket universe created by Malcolm & Marie’s screenplay, and Malcolm and Marie quarrel As if someone who loves to write wrote them and hissed five paragraphs about each other’s mistakes and errors without interruption

“You don’t have the gravitas, the damn introspection to look at yourself and your flaws and shortcomings, and the fact that you may not be the next Spike Lee or Barry Jenkins”? ??? Marie tells Malcolm a person would say something like that right away. At the beginning of the film, Malcolm accuses Marie of giving up her career as an “emotionally damn support dog” One of the many canned insults that he coughs throughout the night

Zendaya and Washington manage to make their characters ???? Incredible tirades sound good, or at least acceptably cruel, in the context of the film, but the entire Malcolm & Marie never rises above a series of nasty monologues that keep the actors in quick succession. If this is the story of love, then anyone who sees it will want to stay single forever

Malcolm & Marie has the advantage of being a beautiful film that, with its acclaimed 35mm black and white film, creates drama in the shadows of the two main characters Direction is similarly great from start to finish, with an especially good focus on Tracking shots that follow Malcolm as he hits paths around and outside the house in search of Marie.Unfortunately, Malcom & Marie isn’t beautiful enough to see his strange, blooming dialogue or the stark effect of watching a couple we just met to ignore, put on make-up, then fight again, then put on make-up again, and so on for an entire feature film

It’s not a love story It’s not the story of love It’s a cage fight between two strangers with remarkable vocabulary who have to part ways like yesterday Malcolm & Marie is an easy movie to miss unless the idea is with them Being trapped in this cage sounds appealing
