Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says it is impossible for a government minister accused of historical rape to work in the cabinet

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has asked the cabinet minister, who has been accused of brutal rape, to provide public identification

Scott Morrison, the Green Senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, and Penny Wong of Labor received a letter last week with details of the complaint

The woman went to the New South Wales police last year, but the investigation was halted when she committed suicide in Adelaide in June 2020 after telling authorities she did not want to proceed

“The person concerned has vigorously denied these allegations. It is a matter for the police,” Morrison told reporters

But Mr Turnbull believes that the man must come forward and explain how he dealt with the woman, even if he knew about the complaint

“He should get himself out and make a full statement of what he knows about the allegations,” he told ABC Radio on Tuesday

“If he vigorously denies the allegations made against the Prime Minister, he should vigorously oppose them in public”

“It is not good enough for the Prime Minister to say that it is a police matter,” said Turnbull

Mr Turnbull, who exchanged correspondence with the woman about her allegations in 2019, is calling for a coronal investigation into her death

Mr Turnbull said he had a “question mark” over her death because it coincided with the publication of explosive sexual harassment allegations against former High Court Judge Dyson Heydon

“Why did she commit suicide? Why did she pursue this complaint for so long and then take her own life at a precise moment when you think you are encouraged?”

The Greens want the minister to stand aside pending an independent investigation by a former judge, as the woman’s death is a significant obstacle to a police investigation

Mr Turnbull said the man must provide a full declaration of innocence before resuming his duties

“Are we going to have a serious Question Time where the opposition asks every single minister whether it is the person named in the complaint?”

Mr Morrison said he had been informed of the letter and spoke to the Minister last Wednesday and spoke to the Federal Police Commissioner last week
