NSW Liberal MP John Sidoti has resigned as minister after the state’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) announced it would conduct a public inquiry into its real estate business

ICAC to investigate allegations Mr. Sidoti abused his influence to advance developments around Five Dock in Sydney’s inner west between 2011 and 2018

Mr Sidoti – the member of Drummoyne – resigned as NSW Sports Minister in September 2019 after the ICAC began investigating its real estate investments

However, following today’s developments, Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian announced that Mr. Sidoti had officially resigned from the ministry

He was referred to the ICAC by Green MP David Shoebridge just hours after Ms. Berejiklian announced a separate review of Mr Sidoti’s alleged business

Ms. Berejiklian spoke at a media conference today that she had limited information about the public inquiry

“I spoke to him briefly [this morning], he offered to resign from the ministry, which I accepted, and on that basis I will appoint a new minister in the near future,” she said

“Because there is a due process that must be followed and I need advice on what matters to investigate”

The two probes were triggered after Mr. Sidoti conducted a fiery budget estimate hearing harassing his investments and denying any wrongdoing

In a statement, the ICAC said its public hearings would focus on whether Mr. Sidoti has inappropriately influenced others to:

The properties are opposite a New South Wales government designated site for a tube station due for completion in the next decade

ICAC is also investigating allegations Mr. Sidoti failed to disclose several business and personal financial interests between 2011 and 2019

Chief Commissioner Peter Hall QC will lead the public inquiry and Attorney Rob Rankin will assist as attorney

As he resigned as sports minister, Mr Sidoti said: “The allegations that the media have made against me and that the opposition and Crossbench have exacerbated in the budget estimates and in Parliament are false and inaccurate”

Ms. Berejiklian said Geoff Lee would continue to serve as acting Secretary of Sport until she found a replacement

When the ABC asked Mr. Sidoti’s polling office for a comment today, staff said they had not yet been informed of the public hearings
