Spinner Axar Patel took 11 wickets over two innings as India outperformed their rivals in all departments in the day-night game to take a 2-1 lead in the four match series

The wildest moment of the day, however, came within an hour and a half when England’s captain Joe Root tore India apart in a ridiculous bowling spell for the best numbers of the career of 5-8 tack on a massive square.

England were knocked out on Day 1 for a paltry 112, with Root adding just 17 runs to that score before knocking out Ravichandran Ashwin

The next day, it was Root who got Ashwin out, and the opposing weirdo was the former’s fourth victim, in a crazy half hour of cricket that stunned fans and India

India reached 5-117 after beating the first England innings when Root took their way to the Bowl in a desperate move

His first ball was bordered by Rishabh Pant and caught behind him, giving Root his first wicket

Then he picked Washington Sundar and Axar Patel and his numbers were 3-0 with three girls India barely knew what had just happened

Root then caught Ashwin calling for his fourth wicket and all-time test bowling figures

Root then caught Jasprit Bumrah lbw to take his fifth wicket and roll India for 145 before the first break

In 101 test games prior to this one, Root had taken 32 wickets averaging 4734 and a best inning of 4-87

Since Bob Willis in 1983 he was the first England captain to take five wickets in a Test innings

Roots spells pulled India back and turned the third Test into a game, but India ended up en route to victory on what Kohli called “bizarre” cricket day

Rohit Sharma hit a six to lead India to their meager second inning goal of 49 without losing a wicket at the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad

“I’ve never been part of a test match where things went so quickly,” said Kohli

“It was bizarre that 21 of the 30 wickets were straight,” he praised his spin bowlers, but hit the batsmen on both sides

The quality of the pitch was also an important issue when Michael Vaughan tweeted, “Entertaining YES but this is a terrible pitch for test cricket !!!! Complete the lottery on day 2 !! ”

Entertaining YES but this is a terrible pitch for test cricket !!!! Complete the lottery on the second day !! #INDvENG

Spinners ruled the competition, claiming 28 of the 30 wickets that fell on the viciously spinning track

It was only the second Test in Indian cricket history to end in two days, the last being the loss to Afghanistan on their Test debut in Bangalore in 2018, and there were fewer than 25 in Test history

England’s last two day test was beating West Indies at Headingly in 2000. The result makes England out of competition for the final of the Test World Cup India needs a win or a tie in the fourth and final Test to meet New Zealand to book at Lord’s in June

England were played out for 112 and 81 and Patel has now taken at least five wickets in three of the last four innings of the series India scored 145 in their first innings

Patel was superbly supported by Ravichandran Ashwin, who took seven wickets in the match and passed 400 test scalps while holding Jofra Archer lbw for free

He is the fourth Indian bowler after Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434) and Harbhajan Singh (417) who has passed 400 wickets

Patel struck the first ball of the innings to send Zak Crawley back, bringing in Jonny Bairstow for his second straight clean on the third delivery

Root, who had previously taken five wickets, ran 31 runs for the fourth wicket with Ben Stokes, who scored the most hits with 25

Ashwin caught Stokes lbw to finish the booth and Patel claimed Root for 19.India were knocked out for 145 in their first innings after picking up the day at 99-3

Root had the best numbers of his career with 5-8 in 62 overs off spin in support of Leach who took four wickets

The final begins on 4 March in the same stadium, giving England little time to raise morale
