After Maxwell had only played four runs with only 10 balls in the first two games, he delivered in Wellington together with Aaron Finch when Australia scored a first innings 4-208

But like the all-rounder somehow often does, he left Australian fans who wanted more after getting their way out of an expensive second half of the season

Neither Shane Warne nor Mark Waugh were happy with the wicket, with Maxwell picking up a weak edge to get caught behind Tim Southee’s bowling

“Why should you try this?” Warne said of the shot on Fox Cricket, “I know it worked for him, but for the last couple of overs when they tried to roll these Yorkers he stood there and hit it right on the ground

Waugh added, “I think if he had hit this over cover or in the middle, he would have hit it with an Orthodox shot for six”

Even so, Maxwell could be content with his entertaining knock, which included eight fours and five sixs – one of which smashed a chair in the empty stands of SKY Stadium

The manager of the SKY stadium later announced that he would auction the chair in the coming days, with all proceeds donated to charity

Will auction this seat @skystadium on @TradeMe in the next few days All proceeds will be donated to the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust Is there a chance of a signature @ Gmaxi_32? 🙂 #NZvAUSpicTwittercom / 1Y0YPAfeDe

“Yeah, at one point it was pretty ugly at first, but once I got a bit of reading on the wicket I was able to clear the rope and hit it against the fence a couple of times,” Maxwell said

Maxwell was also asked what it was like to see his captain back on the runs after Finch’s 44-ball 69 drought

“He hit the ball so well in the nets, we knew it was so close and just around the corner,” said Maxwell

“To see him run it’s great to be on the other end and watch him go about his business. He’s so important to us, he was our captain (for a long time) and he was great tonight”
