A subtle hint in a series of new photos of Byron Bay shows exactly how much of Main Beach has been “washed away”

The New South Wales coast was exposed to heavy rains and winds on Monday, which sparked fears of massive erosion

These fears culminated in the fact that up to two meters of sand from Main Beach was washed into the ocean

Stuart Khan, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of New South Wales, shared the photos on Twitter on Monday evening

“We are seeing the largest coastal erosion we have not seen in many years, especially around Byron Bay, which is completely changing the entire landscape of the beaches,” said Steve Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving NSW

The Bureau of Meteorology said on Sunday that heavy rain, noxious winds, potentially severe flooding, and dangerous surf conditions were expected through at least Tuesday
