Aboriginal tennis player Ashleigh Barty won her first trophy of 2021 at the Yarra Valley Classic The wombat trophy was designed by Aboriginal artist Ron Murray
Ash Barty has completed the perfect preparation for her Australian Open campaign and is battling past Garbine Muguruza to win the Yarra Valley Classic in straight sets
Muguruza had only lost 10 games in four wins in a row that led to the finals, but could not distance himself with Barty, who won 7-6 (7-3) 6-4
The Spaniard battled the world’s Nr1s deadly backhand disc during the game and their mistakes proved costly in a first set
Just watch and admire the barty party 🎉 @ ashbarty is getting her 9th birthday Title and defeated Muguruza with 7-6 (3), 6-4 # YarraValleyWTA BildTwittercom / 9BGbhnIvzz
Muguruza landed the first real blow on Sunday, breaking the Australian’s serve and then holding on to take an early 3-1 advantage
Barty returned 3-3 in the ledger and was the first time Muguruza conceded three games in a set during the tournament
The Australian Open 2020 finalist broke Barty a second time, serving 5-4 for the set – only to be immediately broken back
Barty would make Muguruza pay for her waste and deliver an impressive tiebreaker performance to catch the opening set
Two wild sides put them in a 3-0 lead in a tie, and Barty prevailed with four set points, with a decisive forehand winner sealing the set with 6: 3
The Australian broke Muguruza’s serve in the first game of the second set – after six deuces – and appeared ready to cross from there, only to be broken back
But Barty held a breakpoint at 4-4 and used her backhand disc to knock Muguruza out of position before snapping a forehand winner to break the Spaniard a second time
The Australian, who started the match 5-4, picked up four quick points with ruthless efficiency and rounded off the win with delightful praise
Barty will play in her first round at the Open against Danka Kovinic from Montenegro, while Muguruza will play against the Russian Margarita Gasparyan
The Yarra Valley Classic is Barty’s first competitive event in 11 months The wombat trophy, designed by Aboriginal artist Ron Murray, received fan praise
