Siegfried Fischbacher, half of the German-born team of magicians Siegfried & Roy, who fascinated the Las Vegas audience with appearances alongside big cats, elephants and other exotic animals, died on Wednesday evening in his Las Vegas home. He was 81 years old

According to his publicist Dave Kirvin, the cause was pancreatic cancer. His long-time production partner Roy Horn died in May at the age of 75 of complications from Covid-19

For a while, the team’s name was almost synonymous with Las Vegas’ show business, combining smoke machines and white tigers, lasers and elephants, sequin costumes, snakes and illusions of metamorphosis

The couple ended their decade-long show in October 2003 after Mr. Horn was hit by a 400 pound white tiger who pulled him off the stage during a full show at the MGM Mirage Hotel and Casino The attack left Mr. Horn with permanent damage to his body and after years of recovering, the team finally stepped out on a tiger at a fundraiser for the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas in February 2009. They retired from show business in 2010 >

Mr Fischbacher and Mr Horn, who was both household and professional partner, kept dozens of exotic cats in a glass-enclosed, tropical forested habitat at the Mirage at Jungle Paradise, an 88-acre property outside of town; and at Jungle Palace, their $ 10 million Spanish-style home in Las Vegas

“The world has lost one of the greats in magic, but I’ve lost my best friend,” said Mr Fischbacher said in a statement after Mr. Horn’s death “From the moment we met, I knew that Roy and I would change the world together. There could be no Siegfried without Roy and no Roy without Siegfried”
