“Westminster is an increasingly important part of Scotland’s constitutional future and @theSNP would do well to radically rethink our strategy” ”

Westminster is playing an increasingly important role in Scotland’s constitutional future and @theSNP would do well to radically rethink our strategy

Blackford said it was part of a reshuffle to “attract new talent and make sure the SNP has the best possible team in Westminster as Scotland faces the challenges of Covid-19 and Brexit”

He said, “Teamwork and collaboration are key to getting results and this reshuffle will give us a strong team to move us forward. We have an incredibly hardworking group of MPs – thank them all for their commitment and congratulate those in new Positions “”

He added: “We are at a crucial time in politics. We have never had a challenge as great as the global pandemic and Scotland is feeling the acute consequences of leaving the European Union.”

“With the upcoming Scottish elections and independence at hand, our new team is ready to work hard for Scotland” ”

Cherry was a well-known critic of the Scottish government’s plans to reform gender recognition law

The plan to make it easier for trans people to get a certificate of gender recognition has created a major split in the SNP

That divide in the party came to a head last week when Cherry came to the defense of a gender-critical activist suspended from Twitter

Sarah Phillimore has been suspended from the social media platform for violating its “hateful behavior” rules

The MP said Twitter had accomplished too much, saying the moderation guidelines were “a violation of #FreeSpeech & Your hateful behavior policy does not protect women”

But that defense angered members of Out for Independence, the official LGBTQ wing of the SNP, who criticized Cherry for offering their support to Phillimore

“As an integrative, intersectional organization, we condemn the support Sarah Phillimore received today from an SNP MP,” they wrote

“Phillimore’s anti-Semitism and transphobia are not part of the Scotland we want to see – bigotry in all forms must be combated”

She added, “I reported it to the party’s national secretary, &, who promised me to take urgent action,” she told the group

“Your attacks on a prominent party official who is also a lesbian are a shame,” she added

“I often disagree with stupid moderation policies from social media companies, but in this case they should be commended for censoring or banning someone for spreading transphobia or anti-Semitism instead of being criticized”

She added: “Like so many in the SNP, I am still against both transphobia and anti-Semitism”

“I’m not a QC,” added Blackman, “but by defaming something, doesn’t it have to be wrong?”

Last week, some high profile trans activists quit the party, partly because of the Cherry franchise and partly because of reforms to the hate crime law

This led Nicola Sturgeon to take to Twitter to promise that transphobia would be answered with “zero tolerance”

In one video, she said, “This is unacceptable to me – as the SNP leader, I will do everything I can to change that impression and convince you all that the SNP is your party and that you should come home to where you are belong ”

On Thursday, SNP Business Convenor Kirsten Oswald and Vice Chairman Keith Brown said the party would work out a definition of transphobia to address the problem

“Yesterday some members left the SNP because they did not see the party as a safe, tolerant place for transsexuals

“We are sorry that we failed you and that we have committed today to change. The SNP does not and does not tolerate transphobia

“We all need to have an open conversation about how we got here and how we can remove toxicity from our discussions” ”

One SNP MP told The National that Blackford had no choice: “How many times can you make us look like fools?”

They added, “It’s important to be a front bencher. If you want to be so disloyal there has to be consequences You will take the victim and that it was a big conspiracy It’s not” ”
