Welsh captain Alun Wyn Jones was found fit to lead his team to the Six Nations opener against Ireland

Flanker Dan Lydiate is playing his first international in more than two years and Adam Beard from the second row is also back

George North will continue to play in the middle and will be 99 Won international match in Wales, British and Irish Lion Jonathan Davies missing

Cardiff Blues scrum half Tomos Williams starts ahead of Gareth Davies after missing the fall campaign due to injury and partner Dan Biggar Josh Navidi sits on the bench after recovering from a concussion

The team consists of a total of 874 internationals, making it the most experienced starting team in the international history of Wales

World record holder Jones has on 5 December knee injured in the Autumn Nations Cup against Italy and should initially miss the start of the Six Nations

The 35-year-old has recovered and will pack alongside his colleague Ospreys Lock Beard, who was excluded from the fall team

Scarlet Captain Ken Owens also returns to the hooker after missing the fall campaign with a shoulder injury

Lydiate, 33, turns 65 Play Wales Test and make his first international appearance since November 2018 by teaming up with Justin Tipuric and Taulupe Faletau in the back row

“He’s a form player in club rugby. He came into the camp and trained well and we think he deserves a start,” said Pivac

“He has a lot of experience and is a die-hard player. He’s what we need in round one

“We look at what he does in games, and we have a lot of stats and footage that we use

“We speak to people close to the Ospreys, whose opinion we value

“Everyone has their own opinion from afar, but we also look at what they do in training. Everyone in this camp would agree that they are well done and worth the opportunity”

Pivac was forced to change backline selection after wing Josh Adams was suspended for the first two games for a Covid-19 violation

North started at the age of 13 in the Autumn Nations Cup win against Italy, where he played alongside Jonathan Davies, who was a late replacement for calf injury victim Johnny Williams

Davies is now injured with an ankle problem himself, so North and Williams form the partnership

“We’re confident that George can get a job at 13 and has been running there for two weeks,” said Pivac

“That was our plan with Jonathan’s injury, which he picked up at club rugby before he came to camp

“George did well there in the Italian game, he’s fine at 13 and we’re comfortable with him there

“We missed Johnny Williams, who was originally selected to mate with George in this game in Italy. They had trained together for that match this week, so it’s not uncommon for the two of them

“The call should always be to see Jonathan Davies playing as much as George because he didn’t play good games due to injury and is now picking up someone else

“It was about how Jon got into camp, what form he was in, and how he walked in the first two weeks of training

“We would have made a decision, but with his injury it was a quick decision for us to put George at 13 based on what happened over the Italian week

“It’s also about the form and confidence that George brings. George is part of those discussions when we try to move a player from one position to another”

With Liam Williams also suspended, 20-year-old Rees-Zammit will make his six-nation debut after winning his first international against France in a friendly in October 2020 and against England in the Autumn Nations Cup, Georgia and Italy has started

Amos, 26, last played for Wales in the World Cup loss to New Zealand in November 2019

“It was a straight swap, we planned to start Josh on the wing, but it was publicized earlier this week that it wasn’t going to happen,” said Pivac

“Instead of shoving George back to the wing we just wanted to make one change and that was Hallam walking in

“He’s been training on the wing from the start when Jon came into camp, so Louis was always on a wing with George in the middle

“I see this more as an opportunity for Hallam. He was called back to the squad and was happy with it Then the team was named (internally) without him being there. Within 24 hours he starts “

Wales: Leigh Halfpenny; Louis Rees-Zammit, George North, Johnny Williams, and Hallam Amos; Dan Biggar, Tomos Williams; Wyn Jones, Ken Owens, Tomas Francis, Adam Bart, Alun Wyn Jones (Capt), Dan Lydiate, Justin Tipuric, Taulupe Faletau

Substitutions: Elliot Dee, Rhodri Jones, Leon Brown, Will Rowlands, Josh Navidi, Gareth Davies, Callum Sheedy, and Nick Tompkins
