Much of Edinburgh was bathed in darkness late at night in what locals called a power outage on an “apocalyptic” scale – and a local reader was able to capture the moment the lights were back on

The power failure on Sunday evening (7 February), which affects large parts of the capital and the surrounding areas

Scottish Power announced that it will be their first time at 2111am became aware of the unplanned incident in parts of the city affecting a number of postcodes in Edinburgh and parts of the Lothians, but the utility later added that other areas – including postcodes EH10, EH13 and EH14 – were closed around 2225 o’clock were hit

Meanwhile, some homes in Kirkliston, South Queensferry, Linlithgow and Broxburn were without power this morning but should be back up at 6:30 am this morning

The incident saw parts of the typically glowing city in complete darkness as street lights and houses were cut off and some locals seized the moment to capture pretty incredible pictures and footage of the rare event

While an Edinburgh Live reader Liam Bradbury shared an incredible clip of the Force returning to town and others shared photos and videos on social media as the lights go out

One resident shared a clip of a Lothian bus driving down a street in a power outage and tweeted, “Right place, right time? Edinburgh’s blackout makes last night’s walk a little more interesting!”

Edinburgh writer Ian Rankin was one of those affected, he joked: “40 minute blackout from Edinburgh to Peebles spent 35 of those minutes finding a flashlight and adding new batteries”

Elsewhere, parts of the city center that are usually crowded with people looked even more like a ghost town when the street lights went out

A resident shared photos of Grassmarket and wrote, “Grassmarket, Edinburgh before and after the blackout”

Scottish Power said the blackout was due to “a bug” in the area that has now been resolved

One resident wrote: “Felt like the end of the world. No phone signal and we looked out the window and wondered what was going on. How did we all deal with it before when there was no internet and cell phone?”
