The Minister of Health announced today (Wednesday) that the region will take the toughest measures

Matt Hancock addressed the House of Commons this afternoon to announce changes to local restrictions as infection rates continue to rise across England

With the latest announcement, Lancashire, Cheshire, Warrington, North East, Nottingham, Birmingham, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire will join Greater Manchester from Tier 3 to Tier 4

Addressing the Commons, Matt Hancock said, “The steep rise in cases and subsequent hospitalizations show that action must be taken where the virus is spreading”

The Minister of Health told MPs that the majority of cases that were added yesterday “are likely to be the new variant”

Mr. Hancock added: “Unfortunately, this new variant is now spreading to most parts of England and the cases are quickly doubling

“It is therefore necessary to apply Tier 4 measures to a larger area, including the remaining parts of the Southeast as well as large parts of the Midlands, Northwest, Northeast and Southwest”

Greater Manchester entered Tier 3 after the country exited national lockdown earlier this month and stayed there for four weeks

However, coronavirus infection rates have risen again in many of the ten districts in the region

The latest data from Public Health England for the week ending May 25th December show that the average rate for Greater Manchester is now 1909 per 100000 people

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to review the Tier system every two weeks, and the government will move areas based on how they deal with the virus

The latest announcement comes due to mounting pressure from scientists and experts who have warned that stricter measures are needed to control the spread of the virus

Dr Susan Hopkins, Senior Medical Advisor for Public Health England, said the “unprecedented levels” of Covid-19 infection across the UK were “extremely worrying”

While Professor Andrew Hayward of the government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag) said widespread Tier 4 restrictions, or even higher, are likely to be needed as the country moves towards “near lockdown”
