To defeat the blues, the Samaritans at the charity are encouraging people to virtually contact friends and family

People are encouraged to turn Blue Monday into Brew Monday when friends and family make a cup of tea and chat on the phone or online to show they care for each other

The third Monday in January is considered the most depressing day of the year: the festive season is over, bills may have arrived, payday is a long way off, the weather is bleak, and New Year’s resolutions may have been postponed

This year’s Blue Monday falls during a global pandemic, meaning the challenges many people face in winter are felt even more acute

In order to defeat the blues, the Samaritans urge people to virtually report to friends and relatives

Laura Adlington, Great British Bake Off finalist and Samaritan volunteer, said Brew Monday is about “making sure people are okay”

“Let’s reach out, talk to people and make a meaningful connection and talk instead of sitting and being sad and feeling alone in our sadness. We are not alone”

Adlington said she had days when she didn’t want to get up and instead of talking to people she felt like she wanted to “shut the world out a little”

But she said, “I’ve made myself reach out to people and talk lately, and it helps, it really helps”

Adlington, who has been a Samaritan volunteer for two years, added, “If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s kind

“If you think someone is in trouble, ask them if they’re okay, you won’t make them feel worse

“You don’t have to have all the answers A phone call is such a small thing, but it can mean the world to someone”

Samaritans said that 58% of adults in the UK felt that talking regularly to friends and family, either by phone, video call or in person, had positive effects on their mental wellbeing over the past year

Research from the charity also found that knowing someone to care for your wellbeing can make a world of difference

The study was launched on Jan. until 30 Conducted November by YouGov and comprised 2075 UK adults

Anyone can contact Samaritans at any time for free from any phone on 116 123, including a cell phone with no credit. Or you can email jo @ samaritansorg or visit wwwSamariterorg for more information
