Reporting on the impact of the coronavirus on the sports world

AEW returned to pay-per-view with its Revolutionary event on Sunday night. In many ways, the event was what fans expected from the biggest shows of the promotion as it was full of good in-ring action and fun surprises But few wrestling events ended as badly as at the end of the exploding barbed wire death match for the AEW World Championship between champion Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley

It was an unfortunate remark to end a show that otherwise largely lived up to expectations, and in some instances it exceeded those expectations – as was Sting’s return to Darby Allin as the duo against Brian Cage and Ricky Starks rolled into one cinematic street fight, which was the 61-year-old’s first game since 2015

CBS Sports was with you all night bringing you recaps and highlights of all the action from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida

Riho & Thunder Rosa vs. Britt Baker & Maki Itoh: Baker had a “doctor’s note” – written by herself – saying Rebel was medically ineligible and Itoh was exposed as a new partner. There were some ugly sections with misunderstandings and work that doesn’t always go smoothly The match went smoothly, however, and Rosa and Baker stood out in the continuation of their longstanding rivalry Itoh put her tough head to work, blocking a strike by Riho and then headbutted to start a late near fall for Baker, but Riho managed not to get pinned before giving Rosa the day Rebel stepped on the ring apron, but Baker accidentally hit her. Before Rosa could capitalize, Baker pushed her into Rebel, who struck behind the umpire’s back with a crutch and Baker Allowed To Score The Pin Britt Baker & Maki Itoh def Riho & Thunder Rosa via Pinfall Note: C

AEW Tag Team Championship – The Young Bucks (c) vs. Chris Jericho & MJF: The bucks went straight from the opening bell on Jericho and MJF, blasted away with blows and followed them out of the ring to continue the beating after stereo suicide dives, the Bucks joined snipers at the same time for almost one Achieving Early Filing The Bucks’ dominance would continue until Wardlow’s off-ring involvement helped Jericho and MJF get things going. Jericho locked Nick Jackson in the Liontamer, and Matt Jackson did the same after the Bucks thought it was was a blind day after some really solid near-falls by both teams, Jericho sneaked a baseball bat into a shot and allowed MJF to hit the heatseeker, but Matt managed to knock out in a dramatic moment Jericho missed with the judas effect and accidentally hit Wardlow Shortly thereafter, the bucks hit the Meltzer driver on Jericho to get the pin This was a us wonderfully well put together match that plunged into big, dramatic near falls before the clean end. The Young Bucks def Chris Jericho & MJF via pinfall to keep the title Note: B

Casino Tag Team Royale: In one of the early highlights of the game, QT Marshall got into an argument with Dustin Rhodes when Rhodes struggled with Marshall eliminating the Gunn Club before deciding to jump over the top rope, to eliminate himself Jack Evans, who was out of the match, helped eliminate Stu Grayson by showing up under the ring and apparently being paid by Matt Hardy for the teams cycling in and out and having great moments with Bear Country as one of the most notable impressive shows of a fairly fresh team The final five men in the ring were PAC, Rey Fenix, Frankie Kazarian, John Silver and Jungle Boy making PAC and Fenix the only complete team on the track Fenix and PAC worked together to Eliminating Kazarian and Silver, which left Jungle Boy at a huge disadvantage Jungle Boy managed to duck out of the way of Pac and let him run over the top rope, with n Only Two Men Left In The Match After a fun final stretch between Fenix and Jungle Boy, it was Fenix who managed to score the elimination and secure Death Triangle a future day title shot. A match like this must have sloppy stretches but pretty standard rumble action with contestants coming in, shining, and moving on to the next contestant. The final stretch was fantastic and helped make the game better overall The Death Triangle (PAC & Rey Fenix) won the Casino Tag Team Royale Note : B

AEW Women’s Championship – Hikaru Shida (c) vs Ryo Mizunami: Shida and Mizunami traded strikes early in the game before the action hit the ground Mizunami managed to take over after catching Shida trying to jump from a chair into a flying knee, and the action picked up from then rose sharply as Shida made some great force strokes, putting Mizunami in great danger. The match remained an uphill battle, with Shida hitting huge running knees and Mizunami responding with heavy lariats before a longer section of the elbow-flick trade began. The action persisted when both women annihilated each other with big moves and the receiver came back with a big response Shida hit several Tamashii with knee kicks, but Mizunami kept kicking until Shida finally managed to drive the challenger off with a bouncing spin kick in the face after the match, Nyla Rose, Britt Baker and Maki Itoh ran in to attack Shida until Thunder Rosa came to Ring came to make them run away This was a very good match with some minor match pace issues in the middle distance But Mizunami was the right opponent for Shida Hikaru Shida def Ryo Mizunami over pinfall to keep the title that night : B

Miro & Kip Sabian vs. Orange Cassidy & Chuck Taylor: Before the game, Miro and Sabian attacked Cassidy and Taylor backstage. Miro dragged Taylor to the ring, but a compromised and bloody Taylor asked the referee to ring the bell even though Cassidy was not with him and Cassidy was doing it eventually making his way to the ring, punching Miro with an orange punch and attempting to lead the fight to Sabian Taylor almost won the match after a stake driver, but Miro eventually recovered from the orange punch to save Cassidy punching Miro again an orange punch, but Penelope Ford created a distraction and Miro chose to shove Cassidy into her to get the upper hand Miro defeated Taylor before locking him up in Game Over to get the Submission victory. This was the short one Filling Match That Was Expected Pre-game stuff felt a little unnecessary to get to where things ultimately went, but make it feel good served its purpose well enough and Miro looked strong what it needed Miro & Kip Sabian def Orange Cassidy & Chuck Taylor by filing Note: C

“Executioner” Adam Page vs. Matt Hardy (Big Money Match): Page exploded early looking for a Buckshot Lariat, but Hardy rolled out of the ring to avoid the shot. Hardy then focused his attention on Page’s hand and arm to try to get the shot in the future Neutralize Page kept trying to throw his right hands despite the damage, fighting instinctively. Hardy tried to claim a countout victory by hitting a twist of fate outside the ring, but Page barely managed to beat the number of umpires. Page hit many of his normal standard moves, including a moonsault from top rope to floor and a crossbody on top rope as the action returned to the ring, but Hardy continued shooting back. Page appeared to have won the match with Deadeye, but Private Party ran to the ring and directed the umpire off before jumping in the ring Page defeated both men, but the buckshot lariat came with a side effect and one Twist of Fate counted for two Dark Order ran to the ring to turn off Private Party and tossed Page onto the ring apron where he turned to hit the buckshot for the three, which probably took five minutes too long, but Hardy exceeded expectations a little and Page can always deliver in the ring Hopefully the program between Page and Hardy can now be put to bed “hangman” Adam Page def Matt Hardy on pinfall to win Hardy’s first quarter profit Note: B-

Face of the Revolution Ladder Match – Cody Rhodes vs. Penta El Zero Miedo vs. Scorpio Sky vs. Lance Archer vs. Max Caster vs. Ethan Page (winner gets TNT title chance): Page was exposed as a mysterious opponent, a former Tag Plus Tag champion in Impact and standout performer for EVOLVE where he had a wild feud with Darby Allin, as expected, the match was full of wild ones Moments including Penta hitting Rhodes with a destroyer on a ladder suspended between the ring apron and the ring barricade that move resulted in Rhodes being led to the entrance to be checked by trainers in another highlight, Archer Sky threw one further ladder to the outside of the ring as the bodies continued to crash in and around the ring. The injured Rhodes returned to the ring using his belt as a weapon before hitting Page with Cross Rhodes was suplexed off the apron and by Archer Hit by Caster with one elbow off the ladder Jake Roberts stepped into the ring and hit Page with a clothesline after Page took Archer out but Penta attacked Roberts to get him out of the equation. Sky eventually won the match, most recently defeating Rhodes, who sustained several large bumps on his injured shoulder during the match, pushed Rhodes off the ladder and put the brass ring for the Victory grabbed The match had a lot of action, but didn’t really part with the “very good ranked games” that have gotten deeper and deeper in recent decades. Scorpio Sky won by grabbing the brass ring. Grade: B

Christian Cage signed with AEW The former WWE Superstar, who was recently released to return to the ring and did so at the Royal Rumble, made his way to the middle of the AEW ring Once in the ring, he signed his contract, revealing a shirt that reads “Revise All””

Sting & Darby Allin vs. Brian Cage & Ricky Starks (Street Fight): This was a cinematic match with elaborate entrances before contestants arrived at an empty warehouse. Allin and Sting were accompanied by a group of men in Sting masks who surrounded the ring. Sting mated with Starks in the ring while Allin and Cage battled for the building, and Cage brutally tossed Allin into walls and through doors, the game’s setup allowed Sting to look good without doing much, while Cage was his usual powerhouse to play the slightly cowardly heel and Allin took his usual variety of insane bumps. Powerhouse Hobbs and Hook came in when Allin appeared to win the match after beating Starks with the big numbers advantage, Team Taz tossed Allin through a window propped against a wall as Team Taz Sting chased, Allin recovered and threw a bat at the Icon so that he could push Cage onto a wooden platform. Allin then emerged from an egg He opened a window and drove Cage through the platform with a huge elbow, leaving Sting alone in the ring with Starks, where the two paced back and forth until Sting hit the Scorpion Death Drop to get the win. Their mileage may vary at movie games, but this allowed everyone involved to show their best qualities while hiding the obvious limitations of Sting at age 61. Sting & Darby Allin def Brian Cage & Ricky Starks on Pinfall Note: A-

AEW World Championship (Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch) – Kenny Omega (c) vs. Jon Moxley: In the first few moments, both men tried to push each other’s face into the barbed wire. From there, as is the case with such games, the psychology of the game has been set to center around the continued teasing of a mistake Moxley was the first man to try the barbed wire and explosions after Omega threw powder in his eyes and whipped him on the ropes.Moxley was broken into early but continued to struggle even when he was in A barbed wire-covered board was thrown in the corner Omega tried to get a four, but Moxley kicked him off and sent Omega face first into the barbed wire ropes to set off an explosion Moxley tossed Omega back on the Omega ropes for a second explosion was sent through a second barbed wire board in the corner after a Moxley exploder, whereupon Moxley did a side slam on a with Sta chel wire-covered chair struck

Omega put Moxley on the ropes, but it was Omega who took the worst of it with his face landing right near the resulting explosion, Moxley pushed a paradigm shift from the ring apron to the exploding barbed wire boards on the floor, propelling Omega headfirst Omega met the single-winged angel shortly after they returned to the ring, but Moxley broke the pin by kicking the ropes to set off an explosion and blind Omega. Before Moxley could capitalize, the good brothers ran into the Ring to attack and gave Omega a barbed wire-wrapped bat that was also set to explode when it hit Moxley. Omega drove Moxley through a chair that had been set up with the one-winged angel in the center of the ring to claim victory Beatdown continued after the match before the trio handcuffed Moxley’s hands behind his back and continued the attack Last until Moxley stayed in the ring while the 30-minute timer counted down

Eddie Kingston ran to the ring and covered Moxley as the explosions went off Unfortunately the explosions were little more than a few light flashes and fireworks as the pyro didn’t seem to go off as planned. This type of match is unique and difficult with a standard – Wrestling match to compare but the brutality, bloodshed and all that could be expected was to see Moxley and Omega can do more but the match style comes with some limitations Unfortunately the last blast didn’t deliver and it remained Kingston’s victim and the “very serious ending” of feeling weird at best The ending totally spoiled everything that came before, ending a very enjoyable show on a terrible note Kenny Omega def Jon Moxley on Pinfall to keep the title Note: B-
