OBERSTDORF, Germany The Norwegian Emil Iversen won the gold in the 50 km classic after his compatriot Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo was disqualified in the last race of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships on Sunday because of a late collision with the Russian Alexander Bolshunov

Klaebo had left Bolshunov behind on the home straight, but after a long committee meeting to review the incident in which Bolshunov broke his ski pole in two places while trying to expel the Norwegian, Klaebo was disqualified

As a result, Iversen was declared the winner, with Bolshunov taking the silver and the Norwegian Simon Kruger taking the bronze

The result means that the dominating Norwegians will take a total of 31 medals – 13 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals – home from the championships. Next up is the host country Austria with seven medals

The field remained tight for the first 30km and little serious effort was made to accelerate the pace in the uncertain weather conditions However, a ski switch for Olympic champion Iivo Niskanen coincided with a group of 17 people breaking out

This group was reduced to six as they entered the final 10km, but again there was no runaway and the stage was ready for one final lung-breaking sprint

Bolshunov skillfully held the lead as he came around the bend on the final climb, and this time Klaebo couldn’t pass the uphill section – one of his favorite places to attack

Instead, Klaebo, better known for his sprint and relay runs than his endurance skills, moved down the last straight, slipped into the outside lane, and drove forward

Any chance Bolshunov had of fending off the challenge vanished when his ski pole snapped in two places, but an immediate appeal was successful when Klaebo, who won three gold medals in the championships, was disqualified for disability

Norway appealed this decision but the committee stood firm, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported, adding that the case could be referred to the FIS Appeal Committee within 72 hours
