Two of the best young tennis players made sure that the first day of the first major of the year went well past midnight

No Denis Shapovalov with eleven seeds defeated Jannik Sinner in an almost four-hour marathon in the Margaret Court Arena with 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2, 4: 6, 6: 4 It ended at 12:49 p.m. local time

That meant that 21-year-old Shapovalov, who was not used to being the older player on the pitch, avoided losing the first round at Melbourne Park for the second year running

For the 19-year-old Sinner it was an early end to his fifth major and an up and down month down under

Since his loss to Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the French Open, he has collected his first two ATP titles

Sinner won the Great Ocean Road Open on Sunday and extended his winning streak to 10 games, including his first ATP title in Sofia last November, making him the youngest player to win consecutive titles on the ATP Tour since 1995 when a 19 year old Nadal won in China and Madrid in 2005
