New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Auckland will be locked down for seven days after a community case of coronavirus of unknown origin was recorded

The rest of the country will be subject to what are known as Level 2 restrictions, which, among other things, restrict public gatherings

Ms. Ardern said the last patient had had symptoms since the beginning of the week and could have infected others

“On this basis, we are in the unfortunate but necessary position to restore the Aucklanders to protection,” said Ms. Ardern

The Department of Health said the case of a 21-year-old man named Case M was an older sibling of a Papatoetoe High School student. Several cases have been linked to the high school

The student is a so-called “casual plus contact”, which means that they may have been exposed to the virus

Public health officials are now questioning the case to determine how they got infected

Case M developed symptoms on Tuesday of this week and is therefore considered potentially infectious as of Sunday last week

The Auckland lockdown with level 3 restrictions allows people to leave the house only for essential purchases and important work, Ms. Ardern

A Twenty20 cricket match scheduled for Friday in Auckland between New Zealand and Australia will be played in Wellington without the crowds

The new restrictions also make the America’s Cup event yacht race, which will be held on Nov. March is scheduled to begin in Auckland Harbor

Nearly two million people in Auckland were forced into a three-day lockdown in mid-February after a family of three was diagnosed with the more communicable UK variant of COVID-19

Health officials are trying to find out if the new case was linked to the previous cluster in February, now at 12 infections

In New Zealand, there have been a little more than 2000 cases of coronavirus occurred
