Beloved actor and director George Clooney’s latest movie hit Netflix in time for Christmas, with a stellar cast and an intriguing post-apocalyptic premise
The Midnight Sky is a space epic set shortly after an unspecified catastrophic event on Earth Clooney plays the isolated scientist Augustine Lofthouse, who must try to send a message to the crew of the Aether spaceship to warn them of the impending danger back on their home planet
Augustine’s mission is complicated by both a terminal illness and a meeting with Iris, a mysterious young girl who barely speaks and who he suspects was accidentally left behind on his arctic base by one of his former colleagues. p>
Throughout the film, we also get a number of flashbacks to Augustine’s younger days, showing his previous relationship with Jean (Sophie Rundle) that ended in part due to his dedication to his career

Towards the end of the film, Augustine finally managed to contact the Aether crew after a strenuous hike to a base with a more receptive antenna and iris in tow
There he informs crew member Sully (Felicity Jones) of the disaster awaiting them on Earth and tells them to turn their ship around and return to K23, the habitable moon they visited on their last scouting mission, to start a new life
Crew members Sanchez (Demián Bichir) and Mitchell (Kyle Chandler) refuse and instead undertake to shuttle back to their families on the devastated earth and take the body of the recently deceased Maya (Tiffany Boone) with them
Sully and Commander Adewole (David Oyelowo), however, decide to take Augustine’s advice, and in their final exchange with Augustine, Sully realizes who he is – and tells him that he inspired them to join NASA, and that he knew her mother and at the same time reveals that her first name is Iris
At this point, all the threads of the film come together: the Iris that Augustine found on the base wasn’t real, just a hallucination of the daughter he had with Jean but had never known that daughter was Sully herself – and this exchange is the first time that the two have actually spoken
