NSW Deputy Prime Minister John Barilaro has called Western Australia’s strict border closure “pointless” after the state recorded a positive COVID-19 case

As NSW a 15th Recorded days in a row without a locally acquired coronavirus infection, Barilaro said he “felt like citizens are being locked down,” but the case showed that blocking WA’s hard borders has proven pointless

“I recommend that the Washington Prime Minister consider NSW’s strategy to combat this virus Because WA learned firsthand today that an elimination strategy is unrealistic, “he tweeted on Sunday night.

Late yesterday, NSW Health ordered people who have been working since Jan. Were in the Peel or South West regions of Perth or WA January, and then traveled to NSW to isolate at home until 9:00 p.m. EDT this Friday

Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian said the situation in WA is “manageable” and there is no need to close the border to the west

“WA still hasn’t had a single case of community transmission outside of the security officer, which is why I think the steps we have taken are totally proportional to the risk,” she said

Passengers arriving on a flight from Perth to Sydney last night were screened, but none of the passengers had been to affected locations, NSW Health

Anyone who has been to WA should take extra care to monitor symptoms and get tested immediately if they occur, a spokesman said

WA has initiated a five-day lockdown in response to the COVID-19 case, a hotel quarantine security officer in his twenties, and face masks are now mandatory in many settings

The security guard visited several locations while contagious and triggered the stay at home orders for approximately two million WA residents

Security guards at quarantine hotels in NSW have had saliva tests every day since mid-December, but quarantine workers’ daily testing only began last week in WA

Ms Berejiklian said the eradication strategy was “impossible” while Australians continue to return from COVID-19-hit countries, but said NSW is “ahead” on quarantine checks

She declined to give advice to her counterpart in Washington, but asked him not to judge NSW

“It is not my job to suggest what other Prime Ministers should do, it is for them. We all have to be considerate of what is happening in WA”

Mr Barilaro’s admonitions to Mr McGowan come after many months of evil will between state leaders in Queensland, NSW and WA

On 22 Jan. 23, NSW Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian, WA said she owed her state millions for Sydney’s hotel quarantine program, which consumes the majority of returning overseas travelers from all states and territories

Mr. McGowan quickly returned to serve, saying that if he was “rude” he would say NSW should be billed “for the Ruby Princess and all the trauma that has caused every other state”

The Ruby Princess cruise ship eruption in March 2020 resulted in more than 650 cases and 28 deaths

On Sky News this morning, Mr Barilaro said Mr McGowan had “no problem kicking New South Wales” as he boasted that the WA model of extermination was the gold standard in the country

“I said then, extermination was not the model, oppression was [supported by Queensland and Victoria] and now of course they are in a lockdown and Prime Minister McGowan, a little egg on his face”

Under the new NSW Public Health Regulation, all newcomers are required to complete an interstate travel declaration confirming whether they have visited any of the venues listed on the WA Health website and providing contact details

There were many nervous passengers waiting to board flights from Sydney to Perth today Some hoped they would not need to be quarantined when they arrived in NSW, others were waiting for more information

“About a week ago I booked my flights to Perth to move to work,” Amy McCamley told ABC at Sydney Airport

“I was in Sydney yesterday and was in the car with my mom I didn’t know what was going to happen. It’s pretty scary”

Victoria and South Australia have also eased their border restrictions as most travelers only need to take a COVID-19 test upon arrival

NSW Health confirmed that they will be “closely monitoring” the situation in WA and will update advice to NSW staff accordingly
