Melbourne United manager Dean Vickerman won a championship alongside Casper Ware in 2018 so he knows it’s crazy to write him off

This is the warning from Ware’s former Melbourne United head coach Dean Vickerman, who says the tiny playmaker will prove his critics wrong this season

Ware was not at his best last season despite the Kings promotion to the big final series against eventual champions Perth

Some unscrupulous Sydney supporters have even questioned why the club has re-signed the US Guard for this season

However, Ware has ignored the noise to focus on regaining his best form last round with 27 points in a big win over Adelaide on the road

Vickerman watched from home and wasn’t surprised to see his championship-winning old guard set it on fire when his team needed him most

“You saw the switches late in the game with Daniel Adelaide (Adelaide Big Man), and I thought, ‘I saw that move too many times in the 2019 big final against the 36s,” said Vickerman, who worked with in 2018 Ware won a championship at United

“He (Casper) loves this match and he will either get a three over Daniel or he will come to the edge”

“He’s having these moments when you – even now as his opposition coach – only know what’s going to happen

He says the former Philadelphia 76ers security guard is one of a rare group of players he had to slow down because he was often too tough when training

“He was able to take his foot off the peddling better because it was a little worn after a few years

“As he gets older, he’ll find his way around a little better, but that’s what I liked about him

“I thought it was great that he wanted to win every possession in practice and set a tone for how we would play”

With this in mind, Vickerman has warned everyone not to write off Ware ahead of Friday’s game against the New Zealand Breakers at Qudos Bank Arena

“Casper is a winner, and he will be a winner throughout his career because he does all other things for his teammates

“We coached him at United because we gave him a lot of freedom on the offensive to do what he does best and that is the result of basketball

“He’s one of the best post-guard defense attorneys I’ve ever trained Then there is his ability to pursue basketball and put pressure and ignite everyone else to play at a higher level”
