Christian Porter says he is the cabinet minister referred to in a letter sent to the prime minister regarding a historic rape lawsuit. He denied any wrongdoing

Christian Porter says he will not step down as attorney general but will take a “short vacation” because of his sanity

Christian Porter has identified himself as a cabinet minister facing historic rape allegations

“I can categorically say that what was formulated in various forms in allegations just didn’t happen,” said an emotional Mr Porter

An anonymous letter to the Prime Minister had accused Mr Porter of raping a woman in Sydney in 1988, long before he entered politics

On Tuesday, New South Wales Police said there was “insufficient admissible evidence” to investigate and the case is now closed

“Prior to last Friday’s story on ABC, no one in law enforcement, law, politics, or the media had ever brought me a substance with any specific allegation,” Porter said

The attorney general said he would take “a short vacation time” to assess and improve his mental health

But he said he would not resign, fearing this would set a precedent for other people who have faced similar allegations

“When this happens, anyone in public life can be removed simply by printing an accusation Any child we raise can ruin their life through online reporting alone, “Porter said

“I suspect if I resigned and set a new standard, no attorney general would be required as this country would no longer have the rule of law to protect

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his office contacted the Australian Federal Police (AFP) after receiving the anonymous letter last Wednesday

Mr Porter said he spoke to Mr Morrison that day and maintained the Prime Minister’s “full support”

Earlier this week, AFP said it could not investigate the allegation as it was a state matter for New South Wales

The South Australian Police have issued a report on the woman’s death and the state medical examiner will decide whether to open an investigation

Mr Porter said he remembered the woman as a “smart, happy person” and they met when she was 16 and he was 17 at a discussion event in Sydney in 1988
