Alex Albon plans to help his Red Bull Formula 1 team-mate Max Verstappen by “disrupting” rival Mercedes’ strategy at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Albon used what he considered to be his best qualifying performance of the season and took fifth place on the grid for a potentially decisive race as he tried to hold onto his place for the next year

The management of Red Bull gave him until the last event of the season to prove himself in the tough competition of the outgoing Racing Point driver Sergio Perez

The top three qualifiers, Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, will start medium weight tires, while Albon made a mistake on his medium run in the second quarter and instead starts on softs

“Yes, that’s the goal,” said Albon when asked if he wanted to help the Dutchman take over the Mercedes drivers

“Obviously it’s a bit of a shame because I ran a bit far on my middle tire run

“And we didn’t want to take the risk of running the media again for the second quarter, so we’re putting on the softs, which is not ideal as the grade here is pretty high so the first stint could be a little difficult.” / p>

“But the plan is to stay close and be there. We have Lando [Norris] between us. He actually did a very good lap so we have to be aware of that

“And of course the McLarens are around me and they are the best starters on the grid so we’re focusing on a good start and trying to be there and disrupt the Mercedes strategy”

Albon felt he had made progress in understanding the RB16, but admits he won’t know about its future immediately after the race

“On my side, it’s all about doing the best job I can do right now and having a good day today is obviously a positive,” he said

“Of course I would have wanted to get a little better, but I still have time tomorrow to do a good job

“At least on my part, it’s more about doing the best job possible and making sure I’ve done everything I can under control to get the seat for next year

“I mean, to be honest, [the timing] doesn’t change too much because firstly, I’ve been in this position many times and I didn’t know what to do this time of year, but it doesn’t change how I get into the race either go

“Of course it would be nice to know. But it’s the holidays after that. So obviously with the family, and after this race there are no more races. So I won’t think about it all the time, I’m going to eat turkey”
