While Taylor included literally every name of all of her other best friends — both famous and non-famous — Karlie’s name was notably absent.
In a 2016 essay for Elle, Taylor revealed that she’d “learned the difference between lifelong friendships and situationships” which many people took as a nod to Karlie.
At another point in the essay, Taylor described feeling betrayed by friends who had “disappeared from [her] life in [her] darkest hour” in 2016 during the Kim Kardashian/Kanye West drama. Again, fans began speculating that perhaps Karlie was one of the friends Taylor was referring to, especially after recalling that she described Kim Kardashian as “a lovely person” at the height of their feud.
Taylor claimed that Scooter had “incessantly bullied” and “manipulated” her for years, and encouraged his clients — including nemesis Kanye West — to do the same.
“Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy,” she wrote in an essay posted to Tumblr. “Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”
Ashley even liked the tweet after spending the day with Taylor ahead of a concert in New York!
In 2014, Taylor posted a photo of herself with her brother Austin and Karlie alongside the caption: “Having family that feels like your best friend and best friends who feel like family.”
And in her 2016 birthday tribute to Taylor, Karlie wrote: “I feel blessed to count you as my friend, sister and partner in crime.”
“People had been telling us for years we needed to meet,” Taylor told Vogue in 2015. “I remember makeup artists and hair people going, ‘Doesn’t she remind you of Karlie? God, she and Karlie would be best friends. They’re the same.'”
In the same article, Karlie revealed that she and Taylor had even started dressing alike. “The other night I came over and we were both going someplace from here, and we were both wearing black crop tops and high-waisted skirts. It’s kind of getting weird,” she said.
In fact, Taylor touched on the betrayal she felt at being used by Scott for profit during a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone. “I thought I knew what betrayal felt like, but this stuff that happened with him was a redefinition of betrayal for me,” she said. “To go from feeling like you’re being looked at as a daughter to this grotesque feeling of ‘Oh, I was actually his prized calf that he was fattening up to sell to the slaughterhouse that would pay the most.'”
