Fire-break lockdown decision will be made on Monday morning

Welsh Government cabinet ministers met to consider scientific advice on Sunday and will meet again on Monday morning

The Welsh Government will meet on Monday morning to make a decision on whether to bring in a two-or-three week “fire-break” lockdown.

A statement was issued on Sunday night after the cabinet met to consider the advice of Wales’ Technical Advisory Cell to bring in the lockdown to break the rising spread of coronavirus in Wales.

Nearly 1,000 new cases of coronavirus in Wales were recorded again on Sunday, taking the nation’s seven-day infection rate to over 130. Cardiff’s infection rate has risen significantly to 270 cases for every 100,000 in the last week.

A leaked letter to transport operators in Wales has suggested the Welsh Government is considering a 17-day lockdown that would involve the closure of all non-essential retail and hospitality but that no decision has yet been taken on whether all schools would close.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said that the First Minister would update the people of Wales on any decisions that were taken at the cabinet meeting on Monday morning.

This article details everything we know about the fire-break lockdown that the Welsh Government is considering.

The spokesperson said: “The measures we have put in place at both a local and a national level, with help from the people of Wales, have kept the spread of Covid-19 under check.

“However, there is a growing consensus we now need to introduce a different set of measures and actions to respond to the virus as it continues to spread across Wales more quickly during the autumn and winter months ahead.

“Ministers have held a number of meetings over the weekend with senior Welsh Government officials, scientists and public health experts to consider their advice on a potential need for a ‘fire break’ set of measures to control the virus.

“The Welsh Cabinet met this evening to consider that advice. The Cabinet will meet again tomorrow morning to make a final decision.
