Steve Bruce was left “bitterly disappointed” after his Newcastle side missed out on their first cup semi-final in 15 years after losing to Brentford.

The Magpies were disappointing on the night, as Brentford played well and were the deserving winners in the end.

Each team exchanged decent chances but the Bees got the decisive goal. Sergi Canos delivered a pinpoint ball into the area which was finished expertly on the volley by Josh Dasilva.

This is the first time that Brentford have ever reached the semi final of a cup competition. Prior to this win, they had also beat Southampton, West Brom and Fulham en route to the semi-finals.

The last time Newcastle reached a domestic semi-final was in the FA Cup in 2004/05. That year they missed out on the final after losing 4-1 to Manchester United at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Speaking with Sky Sports post-match, as cited by BBC Sport, Bruce admitted he that was “frustrated” that his side could not reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals:

“We always knew was going be difficult but we expected to perform better than we did.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t done enough. We have to accept what is coming our way and get ready for what is a huge challenge ahead of us in the Premier League.

“But I can’t hide my disappointment because we’ve had a great opportunity to get into a first semi-final in many years. I’m bitterly disappointed and very, very frustrated at this minute.

“You genuinely believe you can score. We had one or two incidences that I didn’t quite fall for us. Jacob Murphy had a really good chance. But in the end, you need to have a little bit of a break in the box and it didn’t go our way.

“I standby what I said when I walked in the door. I picked the team I thought was going be good enough to win the match. Unfortunately, Brentford played very, very well on the night.

“It’s good to get to a quarter-final. But obviously not great when you’ve got a great opportunity to go further, so there’s a lot of disappointed people today because we’ve missed a big opportunity.”

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United squad has been hit hard by coronavirus.

Leeds showed why Newcastle fans want something more. Everton, Bukayo Saka and Brighton also get a mention.

Steve Bruce revealed two Newcastle players are “not well at all” after contracting coronavirus.

“When we have a striker like Dwight, it’s about getting him onto the pitch. I’m delighted for him, because of all the hard work he’s put in to get fit.”

Bruce says said new cases have arisen at the club in tests carried out on Monday and Wednesday.

Newcastle United’s victory over Crystal Palace moves them up to 10th in the Premier League.

They’ve done studies, you know. Against Everton, Arsenal win 60% of the time, every time.

Arsenal are right to make contingency plans because, as this lot demonstrate, you’re never too big to go down…

And you thought Garth Crooks forgetting who played for Liverpool against Tottenham was his silliest take…

Ancelotti, Bruce and Arteta all need success in the Carabao Cup and it’s certainly a biggie for Stoke’s keeper…

Listen, we all know who the best Premier League manager of 2020 was. A huge well done to Nigel Pearson.
